Seedless Watermelon

Seedless watermelons are sterile hybrids created by crossing diploid (22 chromosomes) and tetraploid (44 chromosomes) plants, resulting in a triploid (33 chromosomes) fruit that cannot produce mature seeds. Developed in the mid-20th century, they are not GMOs, but rather the product of traditional breeding, comprising over 90% of modern market watermelons.
